Open-air museums for the summer Part 1

For those who have planned to stay in the country during their vacation, but would like to keep themselves busy or plan a weekend getaway: we have brought a couple of outdoor museum opportunities.

Let’s look at our first recommendation, which is none other than Szentendre:

The Open-Air Ethnographic Museum, which presents the ethnographic units of the country is the most popular museum in Hungary. The 60-hectare area has a total of eight parts to visit, and it is constantly expanding. The antiques exhibited there are all original ones from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. We can visit recreated houses, farm buildings, homesteads, gardens, and mills and learn about life in the villages of the past.

Since the museum (called Skanzen) covers a huge area, it is recommended to traverse by the light rail, which has been on site since 2009 (here we would like to draw your attention to the fact that a separate ticket is required to travel on the train). The Skanzen is even recommended for people who were there before because from May to the end of September, the museum will host new events every weekend.

Aquincum

The former Roman settlement Aquincum, located in Óbuda is a must-see. This beautiful site used to be a military camp and a civilian settlement – the former is now the Camp City Museum and the latter is the Aquincum Museum.

The first ruins in the Óbuda site were found in 1778, and later an even larger area was excavated. The museum was opened to visitors in 1984. Later, from 2007, a permanent exhibition known as “Rome Aquincum” was opened in the park, which showcases a selection of previously unseen objects, the most special part of which is the Aquincum water organ (more than 75 years after its discovery, this ancient musical instrument it is still in good condition).

The archeological site is also known for the so-called Painting house, an authentic reconstruction of a Roman townhouse.
